As an Aussie mum of 4, I understand the joy of a stress free day at the beach!
Back Beach Rd began out of frustration during the summer holidays when my eldest son and his mates were around 10 years old and in so much pain from chafe after a day at the beach.
After researching online it was clear there was a gap in the market for stylish board shorts that were truly comfortable (and would help prevent that painful 'sand scratch'!).
So with an entrepreneurial background, a nature for problem solving, a passion for creativity and a love of sand and water, Back Beach Rd was born (and replaced the urge for baby number 5!)
Naming the business Back Beach Rd was a natural choice, having spent summer holidays in the idyllic seaside village of Portsea, Victoria. Back Beach Rd, Portsea is the link between the bay and the ocean (the front and the back beach).
Back Beach Rd evolved under surprising circumstances during the Covid 19 lock down of 2020, when our family of 6 found themselves in NSW during the June/ July school holidays and the Victorian government announced remote work and schooling for 6 weeks.
At the time we temporarily based ourselves in Byron Bay, however quickly fell in love with the holiday destination, known for its lighthouse, beaches, surfing and laid back lifestyle. So what started out as 6 weeks ended up being 2.5 years!
With our head office now back in Melbourne, Back Beach Rd is inspired by the Australian beach lifestyle, with an emphasis on our two great loves, Portsea and Byron Bay.
Our purpose is to combine swimwear & activewear, creating a new genre of fashion: swimactive wear™
We want to provide practical, multi-functional, eco-friendly, stylish and comfortable apparel for a swim active lifestyle for all.
If we find a problem, we want to fix it.
Our initial goal was to design board shorts for boys and men that would help solve the problem of chafe at the beach (or general uncomfortableness 'down there').
We saw a gap in the market for Teen Boys so created a range of board shorts just for them - teen sizes with a teen price to match!
Unhappy with the amount of plastic found in our oceans, it was important to us that our board shorts are made using recycled plastic bottles.
We expanded into Aussie Made rashies, with a focus on neon colours to help solve the problem of losing sight of your kids at the beach.
We offer girls an alternative to 'traditional swimwear' and combine it with active wear.
Coming soon, we will solve the problem faced by women (and even the score with blokes!) so they too can run and swim in comfort & style, without having to change outfits.
As our business evolves so does our vision and social conscience.

We set out to create the most comfortable board shorts.
Our unique dual fabric in-built inner lining has a soft and smooth inside panel and an outside panel designed to drain water, avoid sand retention and prevent chafe.
The outer shell is quick drying and the same look and feel as your typical board shorts.
Brilliant for children or adults who suffer from chafe at the beach or who have skin sensitivities, but made simply for anyone who just wants to be comfy!
We care about the future of our planet and it's not only our desire but our belief that we should all be doing our bit to save it.
Our range of board shorts are made from 92% recycled plastic bottles and are certified by the Global Recycling Standard (GRS).
We use 15-20 plastic bottles to construct every pair of mens board shorts and 12-16 plastic bottles for every boys board short made.
This means less plastic in the ocean and a more sustainable choice for our fabulous customers.

Back Beach Rd spends more time on the design process, ensuring each piece of apparel is quality made, durable, sustainable and versatile.
We manufacture small quantities to eliminate waste.
Our board shorts are multi-purpose, making them the perfect 2-in-1 short for all activities, in and out of the water.

Our rashies are proudly made in Australia on the sunny Gold Coast.
Many of our postage bags are compostable.
Made from sustainable plants and non-toxic resin, these satchels will decompose when exposed to enough moisture along with anything inside them.
